Lewisham League Saturday 19th October

Year 5 played its first two League matches last Saturday.

Match reports by Dominic Egan.

All Saints were handed a tough start to the season. In their first games, they faced two strong sides that had beaten them last season.

Home All Saints v Rushey Green Drew 1-1

After their usual quiet start, All Saints gradually began to play some excellent football, passing the ball fluidly and mounting some sharp counterattacks. After Arthur had struck a tremendous shot that just cleared the bar, All Saints took the lead towards the end of the first half. Taking a ball from Fergus in his stride, Daniel threaded a pass through to Isaac, who coolly dinked the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.

All Saints spent much of the second half defending against a spirited Rushey Green, Jenny, Robert and Sam all excelling at the back. However, All Saints still mounted some dangerous attacks and, with a bit more luck, might well have got a second goal. Instead, Rushey Green got an equaliser in the last minute, when a fierce shot rebounded off the bar, leaving one of Rushey Green’s forwards with a simple tap-in.

Away Dalmain v All Saints Won 3-1

All Saints again started slowly and were pinned in their own half for the first five minutes. They would have gone behind but for a spectacular save from Sam who somehow got to a rocket of a shot that seemed destined for the top corner of his goal. As it turned out, All Saints finished the first half in the lead, after Arthur picked out Isaac, who again finished with aplomb.

All Saints were clearly the better side in the second half, their passing again a delight to behold. Robert and Daniel regularly switched positions, allowing Robert the chance to forage forward. Jenny, meanwhile, was having another fantastic game at the heart of the defence. Pouncing on a loose ball, she hit a long pass to Arthur, who advanced before curling a beautiful shot around the Dalmain keeper.
Though Dalmain fought hard and pulled a goal back, All Saints were not to be denied this time. With the last kick of the match, Fergus calmly stroked the ball into the bottom corner, sealing an excellent win for All Saints. At the final whistle, Paul Harper, who manages the league, was full of praise for the team’s excellent football.
